Automotive Urea, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or AdBlue, is a functional fluid composed of 32.5% automotive-grade urea and 67.5% deionized water. DEF, when used with the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, allows diesel-powered vehicles to operate more cleanly, sustainably, and in a way that protects both public health and the environment.
To reduce up to 98% of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by diesel engines through the action of the SCR post-treatment system. This technology operates in the exhaust stream to efficiently eliminate NOx, the most aggressive pollutants produced by diesel combustion—major contributors to smog, acid rain, and severe respiratory health issues. According to the European Geosciences Union (2012), a diesel truck without SCR pollutes 150 to 200 times more per kilometer than a modern gasoline car.
Automotive Urea (DEF) is used exclusively in diesel engines, as they are designed to operate with the SCR system. Its use is mandatory in vehicles that comply with EPA 2010 regulations and beyond, since these engines incorporate this technology to significantly reduce NOx emissions generated during diesel combustion. The vehicles come factory-equipped with the SCR system, and the DEF is stored in a specialized tank.
During engine operation, exhaust gases pass through the SCR where DEF is injected. At high temperatures, it breaks down into ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The ammonia then reacts with NOx in the catalyst, converting them into nitrogen (N₂) and water vapor (H₂O), which are harmless to the environment.

It entails a series of critical disadvantages that can severely impact operations, a company’s finances, and environmental compliance. First, corrective maintenance costs increase significantly, as an impure or poorly formulated product can cause serious damage to the SCR system—especially to components like the catalyst, sensors, and even the injection system, which can become clogged with residues and particles that do not meet ISO 22241 standards. Additionally, corrosion in injectors, pumps, and system pipelines is a direct consequence of using an incorrect or contaminated mixture.
From a regulatory standpoint, using low-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) also increases harmful NOx emissions, which not only negatively impacts the environment but can also result in fines for non-compliance with current environmental regulations.
Unlike gasoline, diesel burns at higher temperatures and under a lean mixture (low air-fuel ratio), which promotes the formation of NOₓ—one of the main pollutants regulated by environmental standards such as Euro V, Euro VI, and EPA. Gasoline engines, on the other hand, produce significantly lower amounts of NOₓ because they operate with a richer mixture and at lower temperatures. Additionally, gasoline vehicles control their emissions primarily through three-way catalytic converters, which simultaneously eliminate NOₓ, carbon monoxide (CO), and unburned hydrocarbons (HC), without the need for an additional fluid like Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).
Shelf life: Approximately 12 months under optimal storage conditions.
Blue Cap: Easily distinguishes it from the diesel tank, usually black or red.
Labeling: DEF tanks often have “DEF” markings or embossed labels.
DEF is chemically stable but corrosive to some materials. Only use components compliant with ISO 22241.

It is neither flammable nor explosive, so it does not pose a fire hazard. However, it may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, or mucous membranes with prolonged contact. While it is not toxic in small amounts, ingestion may cause nausea or gastrointestinal irritation. If it comes into contact with the skin, simply rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
EURO V Vehicles: DEF consumption is about 4–6% of diesel usage. E.g., 100 L of diesel = 4–6 L of DEF.
EURO VI Vehicles: Due to stricter NOx limits, consumption is 6–8% of diesel. E.g., 100 L diesel = 6–8 L DEF.
The vehicle will activate a series of alerts and operating limitations designed to protect the emissions control system and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Initially, the system will display warnings on the dashboard indicating that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) level is low (below 10% of the tank’s capacity). If these warnings are ignored and the tank is completely emptied, the SCR system will no longer function properly. As a result, the engine will enter a reduced power mode, meaning the vehicle will lose power, limit its speed, and in many cases, will not restart once turned off.
These restrictions are programmed by the manufacturer to enforce compliance with emissions standards (such as Euro V or Euro VI), since without DEF, the vehicle begins to emit nitrogen oxides (NOx) at levels far above the legal limits.

If you accidentally put Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the diesel tank, the damage can be immediate and severe. DEF is composed of 32.5% automotive-grade urea and 67.5% deionized water. When mixed with diesel, it completely contaminates the fuel system. The water in the mixture removes the diesel’s lubricating properties, which can lead to corrosion and serious damage to key components such as the injectors, high-pressure pump, and combustion system. The engine may fail, lose power, or even shut down suddenly—and in many cases, expensive parts will need to be replaced.
If this happens, the most important thing is not to start the engine. If the mistake is caught in time, you should immediately call for mechanical or towing assistance so the system can be professionally drained and cleaned. Trying to fix it on your own may make the problem worse.
