What Is the SCR System and Why Is It Vital Today? 

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is an active emissions-control technology for diesel engines. Unlike other methods, SCR does not attempt to eliminate pollution inside the engine; instead, it treats emissions in the exhaust stream. 

It works by injecting a liquid reducing agent—known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or liquid urea—through a special catalyst. One of DEF’s primary purposes is to break down harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into atmospheric nitrogen and water vapor—natural elements already present in the air we breathe.

Using low-quality, non-certified urea—such as prilled or dry urea—can cause: 

• Crystallization in the DEF tank injector 
• Permanent damage to the catalyst 
• Loss of engine power
