Greenhouse Gases (GHG) 

Are those that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere by absorbing infrared radiation that would otherwise escape into space. The most important GHG include:

  • Synthetic gases such as HFCs, PFCs, SF₆: Used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and industrial processes, these gases have a global warming potential (GWP) much higher than CO₂, although they are emitted in smaller quantities  (US EPA).
