What is the Difference Between Automotive DEF and Industrial/Agricultural urea?

Automotive DEF is formulated with ultra-high purity, free of minerals and contaminants. Industrial or agricultural urea (fertilizer) is NOT suitable for vehicles and will severely and permanently damage the SCR system.

What Happens if DEF is Contaminated with Dust or Tap Water?

How often should I refill the DEF tank?

It depends on the vehicle's consumption, but generally: 

  • For EPA 2010 compliant engines (approx. 2010–2013), DEF consumption is about 2% to 3% of diesel consumption. 
  • For newer EPA 2014+ compliant engines, DEF consumption is typically between 3% and 5% of diesel consumption to meet stricter NOx regulations. 

 

Can I Disable the Vehicle's DEF Alerts? 

No. DEF alerts are mandatory under EPA environmental regulations and cannot be bypassed without illegally tampering with the engine, leading to heavy fines. 

 

Does DEF Affect Engine Performance? 

No. DEF does not reduce power. On the contrary, by handling emissions in the exhaust rather than the engine block (like older EGR systems), it allows the engine to be tuned for better fuel efficiency and performance. 

 

At what Temperature does DEF Freeze?

DEF freezes at approximately 12°F (-11°C). Modern diesel vehicles are equipped with heating systems in the DEF tank and lines to handle freezing conditions without issue.

 

Can I Use DEF After it has Frozen?

Manufacturers can now comply with regulations by monitoring actual emissions using NOx sensors in the exhaust, rather than relying on a sensor to measure the physical concentration of urea in the fluid tank. The actual emission standards have not changed.

 

Did the EPA Eliminate the Use of DEF in Diesel Engines?

No. DEF is still absolutely mandatory in SCR systems. The EPA did not eliminate DEF; they only modified how compliance is verified by the engine's computer.

 

Can I Use Low- DEF Quality Now Without Consequences?

No. Using out-of-spec DEF remains a major risk. It will cause severe physical damage to the SCR hardware, crystallization, and inefficiencies. The removal of the UQS requirement does not protect your hardware from bad fluid. Quality DEF remains critical for the lifespan of your truck.
